With the external cladding progressing and the Arena expected to be open for events in 2012, Perth Arena is rapidly emerging from the skeleton of 200,000 pieces and 7,200 tonnes of steel. The Arena references the Round House in Fremantle and groups various “elements” around the bowl. These building sized elements give the Arena an urban scale, breaking down what would otherwise be a singular large object to create a unique architectural presence. And the delight and surprise of this treatment is not limited to merely the outside of the building. The most common response from visitors as they transition into the building and onto the main event floor is how much bigger it is inside than appears from the outside. Glimpses of the elements appear on the approaches to, and from within, the city with clear vistas along Milligan, Wellington and Fitzgerald Streets. In December installation of the diamond shaped inflatable ETFE pillows began on the “Beacon”. The forty pillows, installed over three weeks, dramatically alter the appearance of the Arena for those travelling along the freeway. The beacon now clearly demarcates both the north-west corner of the site and the CBD. Work on the interior is also progressing with the installation of over 12,000 square metres of stained plywood and 3,000 square metres of expanded mesh ceilings to the concourse areas. After having recently completed a tour of the Arena one visitor noted that they were, “... particularly impressed by the attention to detail and the overriding elegance of the design, way beyond what I had expected of a public building.” The architectural team for the Arena is a joint venture with Cameron Chisholm and Nicol.
