In association with Philips/Pilkington Architects we developed a new cultural centre for the City of Marion, Adelaide. Initially the project involved the master planning of an 11.5 hectare suburban precinct, including the third largest shopping centre in Australia. Elements of the precinct include the Marion Cultural Centre and an office subdivision aimed at information and high technology based companies.

The $8 million complex houses a new library, cafe, community and tourist information centre, a multipurpose hall, and meeting rooms. The scheme will include a plaza and incorporate an art gallery, a restaurant and an auditorium in the future. The project has a strong emphasis on the inclusion of high technology.

The Marion Cultural Centre, the "heart" of the city of Marion, was completed in November 2001. Both through the use of the city's name and the flow of design elements, the architectural team worked to create a very tangible civic landmark for Marion. ARM has given the Cultural Centre a unique sense of place by incorporating the word "Marion" into the facade and external features of the building, providing a connecting theme for residents and visitors.

The energy efficient design of the Marion Cultural Centre incorporates a stormwater retention system that allows surface run-off to be stored, filtered on site, then pumped into the ground to replenish the aquifer under Adelaide. The Centre also features a solar hot water system, water efficient fixtures and fittings, energy efficient artificial lighting, low energy evaporative systems and economy cycle air conditioning – even the external landscaping is low maintenance and water efficient.
The Marion Cultural Centre was successfully completed within budget and within the agreed timeframe.
